The injury to Douglas gives Leeds United first-team chance to Pearce

Barry Douglas has been ruled out of Leeds United’s upcoming match against Brentford. The injury to the Scottish international could open an opportunity for Tom Pearce.

It is a major blow for Leeds, as Douglas has established himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in the Championship during the last 12 months.

That said, it could give a chance to Pearce. Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t been afraid to blood young players and that is an encouraging sign for the future of the club.

Pearce started in both of Leeds’ Carabao Cup matches this season and showed why he is involved with the first-team squad at the age of 20.

Last season, he impressed in the five Championship matches that he started, managing to score in a Yorkshire derby against Barnsley. Pearce is comfortable on the ball and willing to put his body on the line in defence.

The coaching of Bielsa has already had an obvious impact on young players such as Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Tyler Roberts. Both have impressed their new manager and the Argentine has rewarded them with minutes.

The injury to Douglas will give Pearce an opportunity to impress. If he performs, there is no reason why Bielsa won’t reward him with a greater role in the first-team squad.
