Double blow for Sunderland: James Wilson rejects Black Cats for Aberdeen while Lawrence Shankland nears Dundee United switch

Sunderland appear to have missed out on two striker targets. James Wilson and Lawrence Shankland – who have both been linked with Sunderland – are closing in on moves to Scotland.

Wilson will snub a move to Sunderland in favour of returning to Aberdeen, . The former Manchester United striker spent last season on loan at Pittodrie and he is set to sign a two-year deal.

Sunderland tried to woo Wilson to The Stadium of Light with higher wages. But the 23-year-old is ready to make a free transfer move to Aberdeen instead of Sunderland.

Meanwhile, Sunderland look like missing out on Lawrence Shankland too.  that the former Ayr United striker is moving to Dundee United on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old has been prolific over the last two seasons and Sunderland wanted to take a punt on him. But Shankland will remain in the Scottish Championship as he closes in on a three-year deal at Dundee United.

Sunderland’s striker situation

Sunderland still need a striker to ensure they have enough firepower to compete for promotion to the Championship. Last season, they failed to replace Josh Maja, who left in January to join Bordeaux.

Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg are two decent options but neither were prolific, while Duncan Watmore’s injury problems have been a major concern. Ross now needs to look at alternative striker targets this summer.
