Don Hutchison shares why Marcelo Bielsa confronted Leeds star from dugout, as Whites beat Fulham on pens
Marcelo Bielsa was angered by Leeds favourite Kalvin Phillips on Tuesday night – and had a go at him from the dugout.
Leeds eventually beat the Championship side on penalties, after an exciting 0-0 draw. It was a solid result for Leeds, who have numerous injuries.
Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Jack Harrison are all missing – while Pascal Struijk was suspended for the trip.
Dan James started, just hours after his wife gave birth up north. Charlie Cresswell started alongside Phillips at centre-back, in a weakened side.
But it was the young guns that did the business, with Joe Gelhardt and Stuart McKinstry making their debuts for the Premier League outfit.
, Hutchison is quoted as saying that Phillips played a “peach” of a long ball – but Bielsa had a go at him for it.
“Phillips is like a quarterback. He’s playing in defence, hitting balls 30 or 40 yards. He hit an absolute peach a minute ago and Bielsa had a go at him.”

Bielsa has the nickname ‘El Loco’ and it is easy to see why. It is not a craziness born out of anger, out of aggression, out of tenacity.
It is a craziness that comes from his incessant style of football, his attention to detail and his incredibly precise patterns of play. His way, or no way.
Phillips is renowned for his long-range passing. His ability to drive a ball towards a teammate as though he has just hit a fairway, four-iron shot.
But the reason Leeds fans love Bielsa, among many others, is his ability to keep standards high. Just because it is Phillips, he will not hold back.
That will keep Phillips on his toes. Phillips might be a Euro 2020 finalist and Leeds’ best player, but Bielsa will still confront him. El Loco at his finest.
