Don Hutchison disagrees with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford over latest comments
as saying that England players get more criticism than others after making a mistake for Christian Benteke’s strike on Saturday – but Don Hutchison has disagreed with the Toffees stopper on Twitter.
Pickford, 25, allowed a Benteke effort to fly into the back of the net underneath his body. It was ex-Liverpool striker Benteke’s first goal of the season, in his 17th league and cup appearance for Roy Hodgson’s side.
Goals from Brazilian duo Richarlison and Bernard, as well as Dom Calvert-Lewin, spared Pickford’s blushes as Everton ran out 3-1 winners. But Pickford was not impressed after the match, following criticism from pundits such as Gary Neville.
He said: “Everyone hates you, for some reason, that’s part of being an England player. I think the press and everybody, the punters – look at Gary Neville – they just want to come for England players,”
However, Pickford has already conceded 43 goals this season – keeping only eight clean sheets in 31 games. Ex-Everton captain Hutchison disagreed with Pickford, claiming the goalkeeper is simply in bad form, hence he is receiving criticism.
More like when your playing bad and making mistakes. Our job is to analyse the good and bad form in players.
We have all had good/bad spells so we know what is like. Now he has got to show character and not go under…..— Don Hutchison (@donhutch4)
TBR’s view – Pickford should be concerned about form, not criticism
The difference has been since the 2018 World Cup. In his first season at Everton following his £30million () move from Sunderland, Pickford saved 121 shots – and although he faced more efforts on goal, he only made two errors.
The season after, he saved just 94 efforts and made four errors. This season, he has already made two errors – as per the Premier League’s official website. Pickford has declined over the last couple of years.
Instead of criticising pundits such as Neville, Pickford needs to concentrate on returning to his best in time for Euro 2020.
