Don Hutchison cannot understand contract reports coming out of Liverpool
why Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita could be next to sign a new deal – ahead of star striker Mo Salah.
Keita, 26, has shown glimpses of magic this season – including a gorgeous volley in a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace. But he has struggled at Anfield.
The Guinea international has only managed 82 appearances for Liverpool in three seasons and the start of 21-22. Just 51 have come in the starting XI.
Despite all that, that Keita is the next in line to get a new deal. His current contract expires in the summer of 2023.
Liverpool have handed new contracts to the likes of Jordan Henderson, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson.
But Salah, last season’s top scorer, is also out of contract in 2023. Hutchison told he cannot understand a Keita deal, before Salah.
“Incredible, and bizarre. I don’t know if it is from Salah’s side or Liverpool’s – but they can’t afford not to give him a new contract,” Hutchison said.
“I don’t know why there’s no rush. Naby Keita scored last week, and reports are that he’s next in line. Salah has a couple of years, get it done.”

Salah’s contract, that is. The Egyptian already has five goals in six games this season and he is clearly one of the best attacking talents in the league.
Keita, meanwhile, is simply not good enough for Liverpool. The fact Harvey Elliott came off a loan at Blackburn to start ahead of him is proof.
Handing Keita a new deal means Liverpool want to keep the player beyond the summer of 2023. Realistically, he is not good enough to last that long.
If a decent offer comes in for Keita, he needs to go. The only way Keita will receive offers for his services is if he lets his contract run down.
So, Liverpool need to forget about a new deal for the African midfielder and instead, sell him next summer when they get a chance.
