Don Hutchison can see Liverpool being tempted by Kalidou Koulibaly

Liverpool fans are still reeling from the bombshell news that Virgil van Dijk is to undergo surgery after suffering ACL damage.

The centre-back was challenged strongly by Jordan Pickford during the Merseyside Derby on Saturday and was forced from the action after just 10 minutes.

The 29-year-old will be out of action for many months to rehabilitate, and talk has turned to how Jurgen Klopp will manage without his £75 million colossus.

People have been discussing potential January incomings, and there are very few in the game currently that are close to van Dijk’s level.

Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison reckons the club may be tempted by Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who has carved out a reputation as being a high quality central defender.

: “If they can try and get through to January, with the window not too far away, it might push Jurgen Klopp, the staff and the guys above him to maybe go for a Koulibaly or one of those stellar signings to try and sure up that problem.

“Then when Virgil van Dijk does come back, you could have a sensational pairing.”

TBR’s View – Koulibaly would be a huge signing

Koulibaly is perhaps the only centre-half who can hold a candle to van Dijk at the moment.

If Liverpool do decide they need to dip into the market in January, he’s not a bad option at all.

Koulibaly is formidable both on the ground and in the air, and is a very good ball-player.

His reported () valuation was £60 million during the international transfer window when Manchester City were sniffing around, which Michael Edwards would probably have to work on bringing down if a deal was to be pursued.
