Dominic Solanke must improve on Jordon Ibe’s mediocrity after swapping Liverpool for Bournemouth
Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke completed a permanent switch to Bournemouth on Friday, following in the footsteps of Jordon Ibe, who swapped Anfield for Dean Court in 2016.
Yet if Solanke hopes to succeed at Bournemouth, the English youth international must avoid falling into the pattern of Ibe’s mediocrity at the club.
When Ibe left Liverpool, he was considered a sparkling talent that the Reds had offloaded too soon. But the winger has since underwhelmed after joining Eddie Howe’s side, scoring just two goals in 66 league appearances for the Cherries.
For Ibe, the step down in quality from Liverpool to Bournemouth afforded the attacker more playing time, but success in front of goal has been far harder to come by.
Solanke faces a similar situation, as he scored just one goal in 27 total first team appearances for Liverpool since joining in 2017, with most limited to short substitute cameos.
At 21 years of age, the striker was desperate for consistent first team football and has opted to leave Anfield behind and start his career anew in an environment where he can thrive.
Yet Solanke must heed the lesson of Jordon Ibe and realise that life in the Premier League is unforgiving no matter what club one plays for.
In his third season at Bournemouth, Ibe has made just three starts this campaign, revealing that Dominic Solanke must take nothing for granted and needs to earn his role in the Cherries squad.
