Dominic Matteo singles 21-year-old Leeds player out for praise, says he’s a ‘joy to watch’

Leeds United legend Dominic Matteo has waxed lyrical about Whites midfielder Jamie Shackleton following his impressive display for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last time out.

The 21-year-old has come through the ranks at Elland Road and has already clocked up for his hometown club, also registering two goals and two assists.

In Friday’s meeting with Aston Villa, Bielsa opted to take Pascal Struijk off after he picked up an early yellow card and then committed another foul shortly after.

Mateusz Klich dropped back and Shackleton came on and into the middle of the park, where he shone against the likes of Ross Barkley and John McGinn en route to a superb 3-0 win.

Matteo, writing in the , threw his support behind Struijk, tipping him to be back and better following the early end to his shift, before praising the substitute.

“I’ve not actually seen a lot of Jamie but when he came on you didn’t even notice the change because the balance of the team remained the same just with different personnel,” he wrote.

“He has to take a lot of credit for that – his energy was a joy to watch.”

As a hard-working, talented, versatile young player who’s Leeds through and through, fans are eager to see Shackleton succeed and, though competition is strong in the first team, he certainly staked a claim for more starts with his impressive display at Villa.

Bielsa has always rated Shackleton highly and there’s no doubt he’s going to get a lot more minutes this term, particularly in wake of Friday night where he proved he’s got what it takes in big games, and although he’s yet to start in the Premier League, he’s sure to get in some XIs soon enough.
