‘Dominating’ Toby Alderweireld impresses for Belgium as media laud his performance
Tottenham fans will have been delighted to see the performance of defender Toby Alderweireld for Belgium against Russia last night.
The Spurs ace put in an assured display for the Red Devils. Alderweireld doing well to put to the back of his mind what happened to former teammate and friend, Christian Eriksen, earlier in the day.
Alderweireld has long been one of Spurs’ most outstanding players.

Consistency has been the key for the defender. He rarely puts a foot wrong and Paulo Fonseca – if he’s confirmed as the new boss – will surely build his defence around the Belgian.
Alderweireld will likely play a big role if Belgium are to win this Euro 2020 tournament. It’s a tournament they can win, and one they really need to if they’re to cement themselves as a top team.
The media, then, was impressed with Alderweireld’s display. And while the likes of Lukaku and Meunier got the headlines, the Spurs star was still praised.
What the media had to say about Belgium and Toby Alderweireld
In terms of pure player ratings, website put the Tottenham man fourth in terms of the best Belgians. Alderweireld was given a 7.5 rating by them, behind only Lukaku, Meunier, and the impressive Dedryck Boyata.
Going further, The National also praised Alderweireld, giving him a 7/10 for his performance and adding some commentary to back that up.
“The Tottenham defender put in a dominating performance on the right side of defence. He looked assured when under pressure, and when bringing the ball out from the back,” the National commented.
For Tottenham, this is a good start for their players. All eyes will, of course, be on Harry Kane today as he leads England. But it’s been a good enough start for the Premier League club in this tournament.
As well as Alderweireld, Ben Davies also did well for Wales. While former players Gareth Bale and Jan Verthongen also did well.
