‘Doesn’t get enough credit’… Jamie Carragher says one Arsenal player is actually so underrated on the ball

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Arsenal star Declan Rice does not get enough credit for his quality on the ball.

The Gunners suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Porto in the Champions League last night. Rice had a decent game and could’ve had a couple of assists, but sadly, it wasn’t meant to be for him and Arsenal.

Jamie Carragher says Arsenal’s Declan Rice ‘doesn’t get enough credit’

Declan Rice has been one of Arsenal’s best players this season.

The Englishman, who only joined the club last summer, hit the ground running, and he is one of the biggest reasons why the Gunners are challenging for the title.

Rice has been given additional responsibilities recently. He is in charge of set-pieces and has picked up three assists in his last five Premier League games.

In the Champions League clash against Porto last night, Rice could’ve added two more assists to his tally.

He picked out Leandro Trossard brilliantly from a corner, but the Belgian blasted his shot over the bar. Then, in the dying moments of the game, he found Gabriel Magalhaes from a free-kick, but the defender’s header went over the bar as well.

Speaking about Rice’s quality on the ball, Jamie Carragher claimed on that the midfielder doesn’t get enough credit.

He said: “You see Declan Rice taking the set pieces now. He’s a big lad, so you’d normally expect him to be in the box. That’s only been happening in the last five or six games, really.

“I think it shows the quality of the play. He doesn’t get enough credit for me in terms of his ability on the ball.

“You see the actual cross for the first one and the whip for the second chance that Gabriel has, he has got real quality on the ball. Hence why he’s on set pieces.”

Arsenal need to bounce back after defeat in Porto

It looked like Arsenal would bring back a 0-0 draw to the Emirates after a fairly underwhelming game last night, but Porto stole a win right at the end.

It was a frustrating night for the Gunners. Porto made it a stop-start game, which gave Arsenal no rhythm from the first minute till the last.

Arsenal have to bounce back. They know exactly what Porto will do now, and considering that the next leg is at the Emirates, they will back themselves to overturn the deficit.

Up next, however, is a tough Premier League clash against Newcastle United this Saturday. A win there will completely change their mood.
