Do these three Everton stars need to step up for them to make it into Europe?
By all accounts, it is becoming difficult to apologise for Roberto Martinez and his apparent inability to turn Everton’s potential into something concrete: a spot in the Champions League, for instance.
The Toffees, alongside the likes of Liverpool and West Ham—maybe even Swansea City and Stoke—are a team that definitely have the quality, and should soon be making the step up to a regular spot representing English football amongst Europe’s elite teams.
The Champions League might seem a far-flung dream at the moment, but a place in the Europa League should be Everton’s aim at the very least. If it wasn’t for such an inconsistent season, one would expect to see Martinez’s team in the top six. Instead, they languish in mid-table, a full 11 points behind West Ham United in the last European spot—albeit with a game in hand.
Recent new investors suggest a positive future ahead for Everton and their supporters, with the promise of transfer funds being available. Yet with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu plying their trade at Goodison Park already, the talent seems to be already there—but it’s time for some of Everton’s other players to step up to the mark.
