Djibril Sidibe struggles should see Jonjoe Kenny earn Everton reprieve next season
Everton lost 3-2 against Arsenal yesterday evening and for on-loan defender Djibril Sidibe, the struggle for form continues.
The 27-year-old arrived at Goodison Park from Monaco during the summer. Everton hold an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
Sidibe has been a regular in the side under Carlo Ancelotti and during the current campaign, he has registered four assists.
Defensively he hasn’t quite cut it, however, and the jury remains out on whether or not Sidibe quite has what it takes to be a Premier League hit.
There is one man waiting in the wings that should perhaps persuade Ancelotti not to make the move permanent during the summer.
Jonjoe Kenny was loaned out to Schalke by former boss Marco Silva and as a product of the Everton academy, he would certainly be worth a look ahead of next season.
The 22-year-old has played 21 games under David Wagner’s stewardship and is looking sharper and more composed with each game.
His defensive statistics have proved particularly good for a full-back. Kenny makes nearly three clearances a game, over two tackles and has a pass success ratio of 74.9%.
Kenny is five years the junior of Sidibe and as he is one of their own, it would seem supporters would rather he was in the team learning his trade.
The England under-21 man already has 40 appearances under his belt and some fans were a bit surprised to see him loaned out by Silva.
Development
Spending a full season playing regularly in a top European league won’t do Kenny any harm.
He will head back to Goodison Park determined to make the right-back berth his own at Everton.
As a product of the club’s academy, and a player with top-flight experience, he deserves a shot back at his parent club.
Ancelotti likes his full-backs to get forward and that fits Kenny’s lung-busting style perfectly.
With Sidibe struggling to gain any sort of consistency; Everton might be foolish to splash out on him in the summer.
The Kenny could be primed and ready after a spell at Schalke and the Ancelotti should hand him the chance to shine.
