Dimitar Berbatov says next Tottenham manager needs key attribute, backs Ledley King

Dimitar Berbatov has been discussing who should replace Jose Mourinho as the next manager of Tottenham. He’s told that whoever gets the nod needs to be young and grasp modern-day football.

The former Bulgaria international also had some kind words and offered him a glowing reference ahead of Daniel Levy choosing the man to come in as Mourinho’s successor.

King has been working with the Portuguese boss as part of the coaching setup and interestingly he wasn’t named among the departing contingency yesterday afternoon.

That suggests he will work with Ryan Mason and Chris Powell moving forwards and Berbatov has spoken kindly about the former central defender.

“Ledley King is there at the moment, he’s worked with Mourinho getting a bit of experience and maybe down the road he’s going to be the next one. The next manager needs to be young and going to the future with a modern way of how football should be played.”

King served Tottenham with distinction as a player and perhaps one day he will take the leap into management. It’s fair to say that Spurs will have plenty of more proven irons in the fire right now, however.

TBR View: Tottenham people required at the club

Spurs can restore some pride into the club by employing people who understand the values into key roles. If anything, employing King was probably one of the best things Mourinho did during his time at Tottenham.

Berbatov is right to big up King but right now perhaps isn’t the time for Spurs to place him in the top job.

Keeping on the coaching staff for a couple more years would be wise and as he continues honing his skills as a coach the process may become clearer in the years to come.

The former striker is right to suggest a young manager though and Levy would be wise to appoint a boss capable of playing a free-flowing style.
