Dimitar Berbatov explains he is surprised by the impact of Tanguy Ndombele at Tottenham
Dimitar Berbatov is convinced that Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele could be a success at the club and wants him to have talks with manager Jose Mourinho about his future.
Spurs signed the Frenchman for a club-record fee of £53.8million () last summer from Lyon and it’s been a difficult first season for him in English football.
Ndombele played just 29 games across all competitions during the last campaign, scoring two goals and supplying four assists.
The 23-year-old significantly struggled for game-time in the second half of the season under Portuguese boss Mourinho and that has lead to speculation about him possibly exiting this summer.
According to the at the beginning of September, Spurs are ready to offload the central midfielder in this summer window and he’s deemed surplus to requirements.
Ex-Spurs forward Berbatov is confident that Ndombele could still offer plenty in North London if he does stay for the new season, amid reports of a possible exit.
“I was surprised he didn’t have a good first season because I used to watch him in Lyon and I was really happy to see him go to Spurs,”
“I don’t know if he’s going to stay in the team but I like him and I thought it was a great signing for Spurs, which is why I’ve been surprised he hasn’t played so much.
“He has the qualities to do well. Hopefully he’ll have a frank discussion with Jose and if he’s going to stay, he’ll play more. I think he can bring a lot to the table.”
TBR’s View:
Ndombele has shown in glimpses that he’s got real quality and has the all-action game that suits English football, plus aged 23 his best years should still be ahead of him.
But the powerful midfielder has been unable to hold onto a starting position since his summer arrival and quite clearly Mourinho hasn’t taken a fancy to him.
It will be interesting to see where he’s playing next season, as it’s going to be very difficult for Spurs to try recoup the kind of money they paid for him last summer.
