Dimitar Berbatov discusses Tottenham’s issues with signing striker this month

that Tottenham Hotspur will struggle to sign a striker this month because acting as Harry Kane’s back-up when the England skipper returns from injury will put players off.

Kane, 25, has torn his hamstring and will be on the sidelines until April. Spurs have been linked with a whole host of strikers this month, with AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek the most likely to move to north London before the deadline.

Lucas Moura has been used as Kane’s replacement so far, while Troy Parrott and Son Heung-min are also options. The latter, though, is preferred out wide while Irish star Parrott is still only 17 years of age and without much experience.

Former Spurs striker Berbatov has outlined the issue facing Daniel Levy and Tottenham, stating that they could sign a striker but convincing any will be difficult as when Kane returns from his injury lay-off, a new forward will become second choice.

“They have to, for sure,” when asked if Spurs should sign a striker. “I read that Kane will be out until late April – the season is over. They need someone. Who? What do you tell the guy?

“You come in now, but when Kane is fit, he is the main guy. How are you going to do that, a loan deal? Or are you going to buy someone? It is a delicate decision and you need to be careful who you choose.”

TBR’s view – What kind of striker or transfer would make sense?

Ultimately, spending £30million on a new striker is simply not going to work. Piatek, Danny Ings or a striker in that kind of position in their career need regular game time and although they will get it at Spurs to begin with – it won’t last.

Spurs need a striker that will be happy to act as back-up. Fernando Llorente did so, because he is in the latter stages of his career and an experienced, elder statesman of the game would be ideal. Edinson Cavani has been loosely linked.

A loan move would also make sense, as would a player that can play elsewhere, such as Lucas Moura or Son.
