Dietmar Hamann comments on future of reported Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara
that it would make sense for Liverpool to sign Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara – and that it would help Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
Thiago, 29, has been strongly linked with Liverpool over the past few weeks – but over any potential interest from the Reds, as it would be at odds with the club’s recruitment strategy.
The Italian-born Spain international has entered the final 12 months of his Bayern contract and while he remains one of the German champions’ best players – he is now set to leave after seemingly rejecting a new deal.
Former Liverpool star and German pundit Hamann stated that while a move for Thiago is against Liverpool’s transfer policy, a deal for Thiago would “make sense” and bring the best out of some of Liverpool’s midfielders.

“At 29, he doesn’t quite fit the profile of the Reds’ purchasing policy,” . “Nevertheless, a transfer would make sense in my eyes, because Jürgen Klopp has more workhorses in his midfield.
“Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Naby Keita and could use a technician like Thiago. On the other hand, he had a Bavaria contract ready for signature. If he really wants to leave, the club shouldn’t make much effort to keep him.”
TBR’s view – Hamann is bang on, Thiago adds class to engine room
Henderson, Keita and Fabinho have shown over the past season – as well as Gini Wijnaldum – that they are crucial parts of an engine room that allow Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to get forward.
They also give Roberto Firmino the freedom to shine, and cover for Mo Salah and Sadio Mane when the duo are in search of goals. But bringing in Thiago into the mix would add a bit of magic, a bit of creation that is slightly lacking.
Would it affect Liverpool’s style of play? No. Thiago is more than willing to do the dirty work – his aggression and tenacity matches his genius. The perfect Liverpool player, though, does not fit Liverpool’s recruitment strategy.
