Diego Laxalt is an ideal statement signing for Newcastle United

Newcastle United need a new left-back to provide competition for Paul Dummett.

The Welshman is a decent enough choice in that department but there are better options out there.

If Newcastle can land a top class left-back and make Dummett the back-up choice, then that could prove to be a masterstroke by Rafa Benitez.

And according to some recent reports emerging from Italy, Newcastle could be chasing a marquee arrival in that position.

Newcastle are preparing a bid for the 25-year-old, who only joined AC Milan last summer.

Laxalt would be an ideal signing for Newcastle, addressing a problem position and bringing them an exciting young talent.

The Uruguay international is equally adept with his attacking and defensive work, bombing down the left flank and providing crosses.

He has also played as an attacking midfielder for some of his career, which reflects in his attacking menace.

If Newcastle want to move forward as a club, they need to be making more ambitious signings like this.

Laxalt could become a Newcastle star in the coming years with Dummett as his understudy, if Mike Ashley backs Benitez in January.
