‘Did you see that?’… Chris Sutton says £20m Everton player should’ve been sent off vs Tottenham
Everton managed to get a result against Tottenham on Saturday.
The Toffees managed to put Spurs to the sword through a barrage of pressing and roughhousing from set-pieces, but it a bit of argy-bargy from set-plays weren’t the only dark arts employed by Sean Dyche’s side.
Indeed, at one point during the game there was a bit of play-acting from Ben Godfrey in the corner after a challenge from Richarlison, and, on second viewing, it was clear that there was actually no contact from the Brazilian on Godfrey.
Speaking on , Chris Sutton has lambasted Godfrey for his dive against Spurs, claiming that he should’ve been sent off for his simulation against Tottenham.
Godfrey should’ve been sent off
Sutton shared his verdict on the man.
“Ben Chilwell, he’s the clear winner this week with two dives, but another bad boy Ben Godfrey, did you see that? He should’ve had a second yellow and been sent off, I mean a ridiculous dive against Tottenham,” Sutton said.
Unpunished
This is becoming a more and more frustrating trend in the Premier League.
Diving has been a part of the game for a long time now, but there’s a massive change in the way it has been treated over the past few years.
Now, it feels as though simulation is only punished with a booking when it’s inside the area, and Godfrey getting away with his dive at the weekend just goes to show how the attitude towards diving has changed.
Godfrey can’t have been more than five yards away from the linesman when he went down against Spurs, but a yellow card wasn’t brandished.
Officials need to be sterner on these kinds of incidents, because the more this goes unpunished, the more it is encouraged.
