Despite Radu Dragusin deal, Tottenham still plan to sign £26m defender this summer

Despite signing Radu Dragusin last month, Tottenham are still planning to make a move for Bologna No.33 Riccardo Calafiori this summer.

That is according to Corriere di Bologna.

So, what is the situation involving Riccardo Calafiori and Tottenham? Let’s take a look…

Tottenham want Riccardo Calafiori

Well – according to – Spurs are keen to sign the Italy U21 international this summer, and are already putting plans in place to strike a deal.

The Italian news outlet believe Tottenham have received incredibly positive scouting reports on Calafiori, and will consequently intensify efforts to sign the central defender at the end of the season.

It comes despite the fact Ange Postecoglou already bolstered his centre-back department significantly in January with the signing of Dragusin.

Calafiori could arrive in N17 for a similar fee, with Corriere di Bologna stating that the 21-year-old currently has a €30m (£26m) valuation.

The Rome-born defender has excelled for Bologna so far this season, making appearances across all competitions while also providing one assist.

What Riccardo Calafiori interest could mean

If you were to add Calafiori to Postecoglou’s existing options, it is hard to see where he plays.

Spurs typically line up with two central defenders – Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero started against Everton last time out – with Dragusin and Ben Davies on the bench in terms of backup options.

Therefore, Tottenham’s admiration of Calafiori could suggest Postecoglou no longer views Davies as an option in the centre of defence, and prefers to use the Wales international on the left.

It could also suggest that the 58-year-old plans to use a three-man centre-back system on a more regular basis next season, as Pep Guardiola deploys at Manchester City with Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake.

Whatever the reason, be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen.
