‘Deserves it’: Pep Ljinders says 23-year-old Liverpool player will definitely start tomorrow night

Liverpool assistant boss Pepijn Ljinders has told that Caoimhin Kelleher will definitely start tomorrow night against Derby County.

The Reds are coming off the back of successive wins over Tottenham and Napoli last week.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will be hoping to build on a positive week of results as they face-off against Derby in the third round of the League Cup.

Liverpool won the competition last season after beating Chelsea on penalties in the final and Kelleher played a key role during the shoot-out.

The Republic of Ireland international stepped up to take the decisive penalty and beat Chelsea shot stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Now, the 23-year-old is set to start against Derby tomorrow night.

Kelleher will definitely start

, Ljinders confirmed that Kelleher will get his chance to impress tomorrow night.

“Yeah, Caoimh deserves it. If you shoot the last penalty in [in the final], it would be a disgrace if we took him out now!” he said.

“I think, honestly, one of my proudest moments in football was after the game when we won this cup.

“Caoimh, if you see a talent grow and you see talents turn into men and if you see men with personality and braveness and you go into a final and he takes the last penalty… and after the game we have this moment together, it means a lot. So, if nothing happens today he will start for us.”

Kelleher is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool this season as Alisson Becker remains first-choice.

But the young goalkeeper has made an impression during his appearances in the Carabao Cup and has been involved in three penalty shoot-outs for Liverpool.

He’s been on the winning side each time and now looks set to start his first game of the new season.

The youngster hasn’t started a game since he was the hero in last year’s final.

Kelleher will be hoping to make an impression and help Liverpool through the next round of the competition.
