Derek McInnes claims stopping Rangers star winning Player of the Year will be difficult

Derek McInnes that stopping Rangers’ James Tavernier from winning the Player of the Year award is going to be difficult after the Ibrox skipper bagged another stunning goal at the weekend.

Tavernier now has 17 goals for the season in all competitions. He scored an outrageous free-kick in their 2-1 victory on Sunday. It was also his assist that led to Connor Goldson’s winner for the Gers.

Remarkably, the right-back tops the Scottish Premiership charts for both goals and assists.

And following his latest effort, McInnes suggested that someone is going to have to produce something special to prevent Tavernier from scooping all of the individual awards come the end of the campaign.

“If he continues in this vein of form, it’s going to be difficult to stop, a defender who contributes as much as he does,” , when asked about Tavernier potentially winning Player of the Year.

“That goal is top drawer, no matter what league you watch. The keeper has a three-man wall from that distance, which you would say is fine. He covers the other side which he thinks is a wee bit more vulnerable. And he’s really testing the taker there. And he’s got the answers. It’s a fantastic finish.”

It is surely fair to say that the 29-year-old is playing the best football of his career right now.

He has had a direct hand in 19 league goals. Meanwhile, only two other players have reached double figures for goals and assists combined.

And he has played his part in Rangers keeping an outstanding defensive record. They have conceded just four goals in their first 17 league games.

And if the Gers go on and clinch the league title from here, there is surely no way that anyone will stand a chance of snatching Player of the Year away from the Englishman.
