Derek Ferguson says Rangers have a truly ‘outrageous’ player in their ranks, gets better every year
Glasgow Rangers legend Derek Ferguson has waxed lyrical about James Tavernier after the Light Blues captain penned a new contract at Ibrox.
Earlier this week, Rangers confirmed that Tavernier signed a two-year extension to his current deal with the club, keeping him at Ibrox until the summer of 2024.
Tavernier joined the Gers in the summer of 2015, former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton snapping him up from English outfit Wigan along with Martyn Waghorn.
The 29-year-old has since clocked up 284 competitive appearances for the Gers, registering 63 goals and 89 assists, as well as of course earning himself the armband.
While it’s not always been plain sailing for the full-back, with sections of the fanbase having previously criticised him, he’s been nothing short of sensational this season.
Tavernier has made 29 Premiership appearances this term, netting 11 goals and claiming 10 assists, as Rangers cruised to their 55th title, their first since 2011.
And Ferguson was delighted to see him pen a new deal, describing his efforts at the club as “outrageous”.
“It’s a great bit of business,” he told the Open Goal show on .
“He’s 29-year-old, he’s had a phenomenal season. There would be a few sides down there interested.
“He’s been improving year after year, this season, he’s been outrageous with what he has produced. Ideally, it would be nice for Tavernier to stay for another season or two.”

For Tavernier to be nearing 300 competitive appearances and counting for Rangers is testament to his sheer quality and reliability.
Despite prior criticism from some quarters, Gerrard regularly stuck up for his player, and this season, he and the Gers contingent and fans have all reaped the benefits.
