Excellent De Jong display shows another Newcastle mistake
Luuk de Jong was one of the best players on show for PSV Eindhoven as they earned a point at home to Tottenham in the Champions League. The striker scored the equaliser with an instinctive finish.
During the 2013/14 season, De Jong played 12 matches on loan at Newcastle United, but failed to score a single goal. The club decided against extending his stay on Tyneside. That now looks to have been a poor decision.
There were concerns about his physicality, but he showed on Wednesday that he can compete with some of the very best Premier League defenders. De Jong won 14 aerial duels during the match.

In addition to that, he made three tackles and one interception in a hard-working display. Although he is a striker, De Jong is prepared to work hard for the team.
Considering his work rate, hold-up play and goal-scoring ability, De Jong fits the description of what Newcastle United need right now. They are lacking a quality striker capable of leading the line on their own.
It can take time for a striker to settle in English football and the form of De Jong since that loan spell shows that he wasn’t given enough of an opportunity at St James’ Park.
