Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon wanted to sign 140-goal talismanic Englishman; went to scout him in 2013
Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has claimed the club were once interested in Troy Deeney.
Speaking on , the 49-year-old said he considered a move for the Watford striker.
Deeney has spent 11 long years with the Hertfordshire outfit, making over 400 appearances. He’s scored 140 goals and assisted a further 62 for the Hornets.
Speaking about his future with the club, the 32-year-old claimed that he will be at the club this season. Watford earned a promotion back to the Premier League last term following their relegation in 2020.
Lennon was at the famous Championship play-off semi-final versus Watford back in 2013. However, the lack of finances halted any chance of a move.
When talking about Deeney, the Northern Irishman said: “I went down to watch him in that very famous play-off match where Leicester didn’t quite score a penalty and then 30 seconds later Troy’s put Watford to Wembley.”
“Finances dictated things but whether Troy would have wanted to come or not is another thing. We were huge admirers of him… he was in his prime then.”
