Declan Rice must avoid fate of last West Ham six-year contract
The news that all West Ham fans have been waiting for finally came on Friday evening as Declan Rice put pen to paper on a six-year contract to secure his long-term future at the London Stadium.
In doing so, he becomes the first man since Winston Reid to pen such a substantial deal for the Hammers, given that the New Zealand international was the last person to do so in August of 2017.
Reid has only featured in 19 games since and has not featured in more than two consecutive games since November 2017. As such, Rice must ensure that he continues his fine progress and avoids faltering as Reid has done.
For the defenders, injuries have ruined his chances of justifying himself but with new arrivals now some of the first names on the team sheet in defence, he could have his work cut out upon his return.
That means that, despite the lengthy contract, his future looks uncertain. For Rice, it has been a spectacular rise to the top which has cast uncertainty over his future but the youngster must now maintain his form in order to prove himself worthy of the faith from the club.
As one of few teenagers to be playing regular football at Premier League level, he still has work to do to improve, but West Ham can count themselves lucky to have secured the future of one of the division’s brightest talents.
