The Paraguayan, then the Magpies’ record signing, arrived at St James’ Park to considerable fanfare.

Almiron struggled for a while at Newcastle, but this season, he has completely turned his form around.

The 28-year-old has registered an impressive eight goals and one assist from 15 Premier League appearances.

His efforts have helped Eddie Howe’s side go third in the table, where they will stay at Christmas.

Warnock, speaking on talkSPORT, discussed Newcastle’s efforts so far this season and looked at what they might do in the January window.

While on the subject of the Magpies, he singled Almiron out for praise.

“I just think they’ve done it the right way,” Warnock said about Newcastle’s transfer activity over the past two windows.

“They haven’t gone stupid with money. I hope they don’t spoil it now because they’ve been ever so sensible with what they’ve bought.

“They’ve got that team spirit. I mean, Almiron, deary me, he’s been a revelation hasn’t he?

“I’ll just look at them and I think, ‘don’t be silly Eddie’. In January, just trying improve his squad a little bit for injuries.”

Upward trajectory

Newcastle fans have suffered for many years, having little to look forward to beyond treading water in the Premier League.

Now, the Magpies are flying high – and what a turnaround it has been.

Around 18 months ago, it was the same old. A year ago, the club was in the Saudi-led consortium’s hands, but the club was in the relegation mire.

Now, Newcastle are third. And it’s not like the team has been completely overhauled. Several players who were previously struggling are now in amazing form.
