Dean Smith says Tottenham ‘lacked quality’ against Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager, Dean Smith, has suggested that both his own side and Tottenham ‘lacked quality’ during his side’s 2-1 loss in North London yesterday.

Villa lost out to Spurs despite Ollie Watkins getting himself off the mark for the season. It was a close game, however, and Villa and Smith can take some confidence from the performance in general.

But while the win was vital for Tottenham and their own manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, Villa boss Smith

“It was an untidy and messy game,” Smith .

“I think the composure lacked today. Our quality on the ball lacked. And that wasn’t just from us, I think it was from both teams. And that’s the disappointment today because we know the pressure Tottenham have been under.”

Smith will now prepare his Villa side for the Midlands derby with Wolves after the international break.

It’s been a decent enough start to the Premier League season for Villa with three wins from seven. A summer of change hasn’t impacted too much it seems after Jack Grealish departed.

TBR’s View: Villa unlucky not to take anything from Tottenham

On another day, as Smith suggests, Villa have the necessary quality to take something from Spurs. Santo’s side needed to deliver, and they just about managed it in the end.

Villa could just do with adding consistency to their performances and results really. The loss of Grealish was big, but the new players seem to be settling well enough.

A big few weeks now lay ahead for Smith and a win against Wolves would do wonders for the confidence levels.
