Dean Smith excited about unlocking potential of Aston Villa striker Wesley
Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has spoken about first-team attacker Wesley Moraes and is excited about the improvements he can still make in his game.
The centre-forward moved to the Midlands in the summer in a £22million () deal from Club Brugge and is tasked with being the talisman leading the line.
He’s made a strong start to life in English football, with four goals in his opening eight Premier League games.
The 22-year-old is a powerhouse that has the strength to battle centre-backs and he links up play well, while he’s shown he can be a decent finisher too.
Smith is adamant that there is a lot more to come from Wesley in a Villa shirt and is pleased with his start.
“There is a lot of expectation on him and a big price tag on his head as well. He’s got one in two at the moment in the Premier League, which is a great stat for a young centre-forward,”
“The beauty for me if he’s still got a lot of improvements to make in his game. The key to it is he wants to improve.
“We bought a player that we believe has got a lot of quality, but also a lot of potential and we’re working on tapping into that potential and making him a better player.”
TBR’s View:
After Tammy Abraham shined on loan at Villa last season in the Championship, it looked like a tough ask for anyone to try fill his shoes this campaign in the top-flight.
But Wesley has started strongly considering he’s getting used to a new country and he definitely has the physical attributes to be a serious problem to Premier League defences.
The Brazilian is still a youngster that looks eager to improve and the manager is going to push him to his limits.
Villa have a fairly solid defence that will have more good games than bad games throughout a season, which is why it’s up to the attackers to ensure they avoid a relegation fight and it looks like Wesley is someone that can fire double figures in the goal tally during his first season.
