Deam Smith says Wesley is aware of Davis challenge at Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has revealed he has spoken to striker Wesley about his start to life in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has found life in the English top-flight difficult since his club-record £22 million move from Club Brugge (), and was criticised for his latest showing against Burnley.

Wesley has scored two goals for his new club so far, and calls are growing for him to improve or face the axe from the starting XI.

Smith says the 6ft 3in forward has acknowledged his ‘poor’ start. He said, : “I spoke to Wes.

“I didn’t think he had his best game on Saturday and he would be the first to admit that, he certainly did to me.

“He knows Keinan (Davis) is pushing him. There is only a few months difference between their ages.”

TBR’s view

It has not been the best of starts for the 22-year-old but he must take heart from the fact that Smith has stuck by him all season.

He’s started every game in the Premier League, and two goals in seven games for a young player who has only just arrived in the English top-flight is actually not that bad.

His price tag will inevitably place him under the microscope and open him up to criticism, but he needs to remain positive and work hard.

The good thing is that he himself has not been happy with his performances which could fuel his improvement, especially with Davis breathing down his neck.
