De Jong comments on Manchester City-owned Harrison, as he shines on loan at Leeds
Nigel de Jong has told BeIN Sports, that he thinks Jack Harrison has a chance of breaking into England’s side ahead of Euro 2021 – but only if the Manchester City-owned winger is selected as a wing back, or a defensive winger.
Harrison, 24, has been excellent for Leeds this season in what is his first season in the Premier League. The two-time England Under-21 international is currently in his third season on loan at Leeds, with a permanent deal expected in the summer.
The winger has scored six goals, his last coming against Palace on Monday in a 2-0 win over the Eagles. He has also laid on four assists and with England lacking in options on the left flank, his name could emerge as an option.
Harrison himself claimed this year that a permanent £10million deal to Leeds is set to come to fruition in the summer (), and de Jong has suggested the winger has a chance of playing for England – but only if he plays deeper for the Three Lions.
“Of course, he could be a potential future candidate to be in the squad of England, especially on that left side. He’s more of a power wing-back, for me. Than an actual left-winger,” . “Left winger, no.
“You have the likes of Grealish, Mount, Maddison, Rashford and Sterling, so it’s going to be hard for him to get into that position. But as a left-back or as a power wing-back, an engine room, yes, I think he can potentially be in the England squad.”
TBR’s view – Can Harrison really get into England side?
Kalvin Phillips is expected to be a part of the England side this summer when the Whites board the plane to Euro 2021, while Patrick Bamford has been linked with a potential call-up in March to see if he can hack England football.
However, not much has been made of Harrison – but if Bamford is to be considered, then so should the Manchester City loanee. His form, work rate, goals and assists should come into the reckoning. Certainly, Gareth Southgate will have taken note.
But before Euro 2021, is there a chance? Bamford has little chance, so Harrison will probably have to wait.
