Davis would be Rangers’ heartbreak if he made Ibrox return during January window

Steven Davis’ return to Rangers has been mooted for a while, but claim that it is closer than ever to becoming a reality.

The Northern Ireland international has slipped out of favour at Southampton and it seems as if new Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is not a particular admirer either.

Someone who knows what Davis would offer to this new Rangers side is Kevin Thomson, who played alongside him for two hugely successful seasons at Ibrox.

That would make him similar to how Gerrard was during his playing days; a virtuoso midfielder in a side that perhaps lacked quality and direction at times.

Davis is not in Gerrard’s league in terms of quality but his energy and experience could galvanise a side that has been looking a little low on leadership in recent weeks.

That has impacted on their consistency at times and James Tavernier could do with somebody else in the ranks to galvanise the squad, and Thomson’s comments indicate that Davis would be exactly that man if his protracted arrival gets over the line.
