Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis haven’t quite hit the ground running at Rangers so far.
The pair were brought in on loan by Steven Gerrard in January, but so far neither have had much of an impact at Ibrox.
Defoe has played second fiddle to Alfredo Morelos and made 14 appearances for the Light Blues, scoring five goals.
Davis has made nine appearances with contributing any goals or assists.
Neither has managed to force their way into Gerrard’s starting XI yet, but the pair have been urged to keep at it by former defender David Weir.
‘You can’t take shortcuts’
He said, : “When you are at the stage where Rangers are in the title race, when you have a bad game or lose a couple, then people say you are out of the title race.
“It is the same as a senior player, when you are 36, 37, 38, 39 or whatever it may be after one or two bad games, people will be writing you off so you know you have to be on it every single game.
“You can’t take shortcuts, you can’t skip steps. You have to be the best prepared you can be and fully concentrated on the pitch because if you have a bad game or make a mistake it’s the end of the world in some people’s eyes.”
Weir, who played for Rangers for five seasons after an initial loan move, didn’t retire until the age of 41 and so is well placed to advise Defoe and Davis, 36 and 34 respectively.
Weir went on to say that older players need to be ‘mentally strong’, given the amount of pressure that comes with playing for Rangers or Celtic.
The pair aren’t the most popular figures right now, but next season they’ll have another chance to make their mark in the pursuit of silverware.
