David Wagner’s baffling Jonas Lossl decision laid bare in humbling defeat
Huddersfield Town got handed a thrashing by the reigning champions this afternoon. Manchester City put the Terriers to the sword in a stunning 6-1 win.
But as good as Manchester City were, they were helped out by an unconvincing performance from Ben Hamer.
He came rushing out for Sergio Aguero’s opening goal, should have saved Gabriel Jesus’ effort and spilled the ball for Aguero’s second.
It was a performance that Hamer would rather forget. But it also asks questions of David Wagner.
Hamer, who has made a career mostly as a back-up keeper since leaving Charlton Athletic in 2014. For four seasons he acted as a back-up to Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester City. This summer, Huddersfield signed him on a free transfer, where he was expected to be the back-up to Danish stopper Jonas Lossl.
But Hamer has started the season as the number one and it is hard to understand why.
Lossl spent last season on loan at Huddersfield from Mainz and it was made a permanent move in the summer. It came after he impressed for the club. He certainly has an error in him, but his shot-stopping ability make him a top option between the sticks.
Huddersfield’s decision to drop him is certainly bizarre. If a superior option had been brought in this summer, it would be understandable. Hamer is not a superior option. Huddersfield fans will surely hope to see Lossl back between the sticks for next week.
