Celtic will hope David Turnbull can produce the goods 12 months after transfer failure

Celtic are edging closer to the signing of David Turnbull from Motherwell after a £3 million bid was accepted,

The 19-year-old scored 16 goals and registered seven assists during 2018/19 and looks set to be a promising player.

This deal will go some way towards making up for last summer’s transfer market failure.

Celtic opted not to pay over £2 million for John McGinn last summer, The Scotland international went to Aston Villa for £2.7 million and helped the club to promotion to the Premier League.

The unwillingness to part with an extra £700,000 looks like a catastrophic error now.

Celtic have now moved to land Turnbull, who is very much cut from a similar cloth as McGinn.

Both players are intelligent, both can score goals and both can tie defenders in knots.

Following the failed attempt to sign McGinn, Turnbull will be under pressure to perform.

The Motherwell man has a mature head on his shoulders and there is enough to suggest that he could go onto become even better than McGinn.

The pending deal was vital for Celtic this summer, however.

Celtic fans will now be hopeful that the youngster to have a similar impact at Celtic Park to that of the 24-year-old in the West Midlands.
