David Seaman shares what Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri needs to start doing to become even more dangerous

Arsenal academy graduate Ethan Nwaneri has enjoyed a superb breakthrough season, becoming a key squad player for Mikel Arteta.

The Arsenal prodigy became the youngest ever Premier League player aged 15 years and 181 days when he came on for the Gunners against Brentford in 2022.

Two years on, Nwaneri has made his breakthrough in the Arsenal first team and now has 24 senior appearances and seven goals to his name.

Nwaneri’s latest goal came in the 5-1 hammering of Manchester City at the weekend as he cut inside and curled a superb effort past Stefan Ortega in injury time.

Arsenal legend David Seaman has spoken about Nwaneri’s goal and shared what the Gunners talent needs to do to become even more dangerous.

David Seaman tells Ethan Nwaneri to cut ‘the other way’ rather than inside all the time

Seaman, speaking on the Seaman Says podcast, warned Ethan Nwaneri that cutting inside and having a shot risks becoming “obvious” for opponents.

The Highbury icon told Nwaneri that he needs to start going “the other way”, like Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah can do, in order to keep the opposition on their toes.

Asked about his favourite goal from Arsenal’s win over Man City, Seaman said: “Nwaneri’s, I think. I like what he does when he cuts inside and then (shoots).

“He needs to do one the other way, because you know, goalies will start reading it a little bit and as soon as he flips on the other way then they have to wait.

“So at the moment they might just be edging that side because if he does it every time it’s obvious.

“He does flip it, Salah, I’ve seen him flip it the other way… but yeah, I like Nwaneri’s one is best.”

Arteta’s plans for Nwaneri

Nwaneri was largely deployed as an attacking midfielder during his time with the Arsenal Under-21s, while his time with the Under-18s saw him played at centre-forward a lot too.

This season alone, Nwaneri has played as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder, and as a right winger for Arsenal.

Earlier this season, Mikel revealed that he thinks Nwaneri could be developed into a centre-forward.

Asked whether Nwaneri and Odegaard could play together, Arteta said: “Depending on who they are surrounded with and which position, Ethan can play as a right attacking midfielder, left attacking midfielder, as a right winger and there is another position he can develop into in a few years time.”

When asked for further details, the Arsenal manager said: “(Number) nine. He’s got the goal in front of him and he just looks at the goal. He has a tremendous ability to put the ball in the back of the net.”
