David Ornstein says Arsenal have ‘a younger version of Lacazette’ right at the top of their recruitment list
Gabriel Jesus is Arsenal’s top striker target ahead of the summer transfer window, according to journalist David Ornstein.
Speaking after last night’s hugely disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Tottenham, Ornstein spoke on about Arsenal and their plans going forward.
Plenty in terms of Arsenal’s summer recruitment may revolve around whether or not they get into next season’s Champions League.
That is still in their own hands as it stands despite last night’s defeat but they need to recover quickly, and in any case, they need additional firepower next term.
Jesus is Arsenal’s top striker target
“Arsenal have pretty much got (Jesus) right at the top of their list right now for the striker position,” said Ornstein.
“They’re going to need to bring in one or two depending on what happens with (Eddie) Nketiah and (Alexandre) Lacazette. They didn’t replace (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang either.
“Jesus fits the bill. Not only has he worked with Mikel Arteta, not only does the technical director Edu know him very well from Brazil, he does exactly what Arteta is looking for.
“Maybe a younger version of Lacazette and gets more goals. There will be other options as well. We don’t know if City will let him go but with only one year to go and no obvious signs of contract talks, a deal looks very possible.”
It was reported earlier this week that Arsenal are close to agreeing terms with Jesus, although it seems unlikely City would sanction anything official until their pursuit of the title is sewn up.
The comparison with Lacazette is not really accurate. Lacazette drops deeper, but Jesus offers far more goal threat and can play on either flank too.
Would Jesus come to Arsenal if they are not in the Champions League? That may be a question we find the answer out to by the end of the month.
It seems the Gunners are keen to get him, and they need at least one new frontman to boost their options next term.
