‘There’s no questioning anybody’: David Moyes is adamant his players are still motivated
David Moyes claims the players’ work rate is still there as his West Ham side continues to drop points.
West Ham missed the opportunity to temporarily climb back into the top-four as they drew 1-1 at home against Newcastle. A win for the Hammers could have been key in their Champions League hopes, but instead, it’s yet another slip up for David Moyes’ side.
To make matters worse for the Hammers, Manchester United, Spurs and Wolves, who already have games in hand over the East London side, picked up three points in their respective fixtures.
Speaking to the after the game David Moyes said: “If anyone questioned any of our players on their effort or commitment, I’d back the players up 100 per cent. There’s no questioning anybody [in that regard].’
‘What we’re lacking at the moment is being more creative on the ball, being correct on the ball, even doing the correct things defensively.’
‘In truth, I didn’t think we cleared our box well today at all and we didn’t show good designs in our play.’
‘All of those things come before anybody could question that we’re not working hard.”
Craig Dawson opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after heading home an Aaron Cresswell free-kick. However, Joe Willock’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time was enough to share the points.
West Ham’s drop in form
This result, along with the losses against Leeds and Southampton, may well be the difference between qualifying for European football or not.
Although West Ham are four-games unbeaten in all competitions, the manner of their performances has raised questions among the fans. And Moyes reiterated that he is well aware that sometimes a point isn’t enough.
He said: “The Premier League is not an easy league to be in. But also one point doesn’t get you enough when you’re trying to be successful.’
‘We knew today that it was a really important day to try and get three points but unfortunately we couldn’t.”
West Ham’s next fixture is huge. They host Wolves, who are just two points behind the Hammers. Bruno Lage’s side also have two games in hand, plus they’ve already got the better of the Hammers once this season.
The Midlands side are having a good season and one that is going under the radar. This means West Ham will have to up their game if they are to pick up a good result.
Moyes added: “We have to recognise that we’re not quite at it.’
‘We probably need to start individually, I’ll check to see if we think we’re doing the right things to get them back [to their levels]. But ultimately we need to find a way of getting a better level of performance than we’re getting at the moment.”
