David Luiz reportedly almost joined Arsenal in 2017 before late deal collapse
David Luiz made a shock deadline day move to Arsenal this summer, but it was not the first time the Gunners had showed an interest,
They that in July 2017, when Arsene Wenger was still the manager of the club, Arsenal came very close to signing Luiz before the deal collapsed late on.
The deal was so close that he told team-mates that it was on only to be denied at the last – two years before finally making the move across London.
That suggests that perhaps it shouldn’t have been as big a surprise was it was when he finally made the move.

TBR’s View – This shows Luiz didn’t just join Arsenal on a whim
Perhaps Luiz’s move could have been viewed as a late-window show of desperation from a player who found himself out of favour but wanted to remain in the Premier League and in London.
But, he was close to going to Arsenal before, which shows he is keen on the club and hasn’t just rushed into a move he hasn’t thought about.
The 2019 iteration of the Gunners is different to the Wenger version that Luiz would have joined in 2017, and the club is better placed to push on and have success this season.
