David Luiz reacts to Pablo Mari’s display on Arsenal debut
David Luiz has lauded Pablo Mari and suggested that he produced an amazing performance as the centre-back made his debut for Arsenal on Monday night, .
Mikel Arteta’s men beat Portsmouth 2-0 at Fratton Park to book their place in the quarter-final of the FA Cup. Sokratis and Eddie Nketiah bagged the goals for the visitors.
It was a notable night for the Gunners. Along with the youngsters who got another chance to impress, Mari made his senior debut following his January loan move.
The centre-back had been building up his fitness with the under-23s. But he must now surely be in contention to feature in the Premier League after getting 90 minutes under his belt at Pompey.
And he seemed to do extremely well. that Mari completed 77 of his 86 passes. He also won three aerial duels and made five clearances.
And Luiz suggested that he could not be happier with what he saw from his new teammate on his Arsenal bow.
“He’s great. Everybody was 100 per cent focused, I’m so pleased we didn’t concede,” he said, .
“Pablo is a great guy, great player, he had an amazing game. We are here to help each other and we have 25 players ready to play for Arsenal, ready to do the job. [When it’s] like that, it’s a pleasure to play football.”
It will be a big boost for Arsenal if Mari kicks on. The Gunners have often looked a lot better defensively since Arteta’s appointment. And Mari’s arrival can potentially push standards further.
It will be difficult to get carried away off the back of a clean sheet against a League One side. But the early signs are extremely positive.
