David Luiz explains why he left Chelsea to join Arsenal on transfer deadline day
David Luiz made one of the most surprising moves of the transfer window when he swapped Chelsea for their London rivals Arsenal on deadline day.
He made his first start for his new club in the 2-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday, and Luiz then offered an explanation of his shock switch.
: “I am a guy with ambition and that is why I moved. I could choose a comfortable zone and get money and be cool. But I like a new a challenge and new things in my life.
“This is what gives me oxygen and gives me motivation. Everyone knows I was so happy at Chelsea and won many trophies there and had a real honest conversation with Lamps, and Lamps had different ideas for his plans for the year.”

TBR’s View – Luiz could be the ideal short-term solution for Arsenal
William Saliba’s delayed arrival at Arsenal meant that Unai Emery needed a short-term central defensive solution after securing his signature – and Luiz could be the man.
He shouldn’t need time to adjust because he is still in London, still in the Premier League and is an experienced, confident defender who has won the Premier League and Champions League.
Chelsea are going in a different direction – focusing on youth – whereas Arsenal needed a sprinkling of experience, especially after captain Laurent Koscielny left the club in acrimonious circumstances, and Luiz could be ideal for that if the early signs from his home debut are anything to go by.
