David James shares who he thinks is better between Liverpool’s Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson

Liverpool and Manchester City are two of the best teams in the Premier League, with several epic title challenges between them in recent years.

The Reds twice finished second behind the Citizens despite accruing over 90 points and, in 2020, they finally dethroned Pep Guardiola’s side.

Key to the success of both Liverpool and Man City has been their personnel in between the sticks.

The Anfield outfit has Alisson Becker in their ranks, while the Etihad Stadium side has Ederson on their books.

The two Brazilians have been superb for the Reds and the Citizens respectively over the years, helping both clubs win plenty of trophies.

Now, former Liverpool and Man City goalkeeper David James has given his verdict on who he thinks is better out of Alisson and Ederson.

David James picks Liverpool’s Alisson over Man City’s Ederson

James, speaking on the Seaman Says podcast, said Alisson is the better goalkeeper out of the two, and gave his reasons.

“He makes big saves regularly which allow Liverpool to go and win,” he said.

“This weekend was a prime example, you know, a big save against Crystal Palace allows them to go on to win.

“He can and will deliver long balls, short balls, he can play out the back…

“Yes, he doesn’t kick as far as Ederson but I think his accuracy is probably better. Cool as anything and he’s got a lovely beard!”

Difficult debate as Premier League blessed and Brazil spoilt for choice

Ederson is certainly the better option to start over Alisson for Man City because he’s so crucial to Pep Guardiola’s system in playing out from the back.

However, Alisson has traits which suggest he’s a better all-round goalkeeper. It can be argued that his positioning and shot-stopping are better than Alisson.

Either way, the Brazil national team is spoilt for choice when both are fit, and if one is injured, they have the perfect replacement.

Meanwhile, the Premier League is blessed to have two goalkeeper of the highest quality plying their trades in England.
