David James shares who could be ‘the right fit’ as Spurs manager

Tottenham Hotspur interim boss Ryan Mason could well be “the right fit” as permanent Spurs manager, according to Premier League legend David James.

The 29-year-old has taken the reins at Tottenham until the end of the season while Daniel Levy continues to look for Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

When a vacancy opens up at a big Premier League club like Tottenham, plenty of big names will get linked with the role.

Scott Parker, Graham Potter, Rafael Benitez, Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri are just a few of the coaches who have been linked with Spurs in recent weeks.

However, James noted how Tottenham’s players looked “the freest and happiest” he’s seen in a “long, long time” against Wolves, and feels Mason deserves credit for that.

“When you look at Dele Alli’s performance, there was some passing and moving in there where Tottenham looked the freest and happiest I’ve seen in a long long time,” he told .

“If that is what you want your players to do, perhaps Mason could be the right fit. Get another manager in, you might lose that, and it becomes more rigid.”

TBR View:

While Mason has done well so far, he’s perhaps a bit young and inexperienced to be handed the reins of a top Premier League club permanently.

Next term, there’s a lot more planning needed at the club, much higher expectations, and it’d be very much a case of being thrown in at the deep end.

Mason is very talented and looks like he could have a big career in management.

However, for the time being he’d be better off being a coach or assistant and then go for management a few years down the line.
