David James says one Arsenal player needs to do ‘a lot more’ to win place

Aaron Ramsdale is currently the man in possession of the number one spot at Arsenal and Bernd Leno must do more,

The German goalkeeper has lost his place to Arsenal’s new recruit recently. Leno did get the chance to shine in last night’s Carabao Cup clash against AFC Wimbledon, however.

The 29-year-old helped Arsenal claim a third consecutive clean sheet and the defence problems at the Emirates Stadium do look to be easing.

Some did suggest that Leno wanted to leave during the summer. He did stay at Arsenal though, with his place as the first-choice already up for discussion.

Arsenal could eventually part with for Ramsdale. As a result, it seemed unlikely he’d be second fiddle for long.

After a disastrous start to the campaign, Mikel Arteta opted to play Ramsdale in games against Norwich and Burnley. The Gunners won both games 1-0 and the 23-year-old now looks to be in possession of the gloves.

Former England goalkeeper James agrees that Ramsdale should be the number one. He thinks Leno could be in for a long season and simply has to do more.

He told ): “Aaron Ramsdale has got an opportunity here to take the number one spot. Bernd Leno, unfortunately, is going to have to do a lot more in training and in the cup games to force his way back in.

“For me, right now, Ramsdale is the ‘keeper of the gloves’.”

Leno facing uncertain Arsenal future

The man with nine caps for Germany looks like he could be on borrowed time at the Emirates Stadium.

He certainly won’t be happy playing second fiddle all season and will want some assurances from his boss.

Ramsdale hasn’t done anything to warrant being dropped at this stage though and he looks like the flavour of the month for Arteta.

Leno earns and that is a big wage to be paying what is essentially a substitute goalkeeper.

If Arsenal can find a buyer for Leno in January then it could suit all parties – provided Ramsdale continues showing his current form.
