Darren Bent discusses whether Arsenal star Ainsley Maitland-Niles should join Everton on deadline day

(Tuesday, 8.10AM) that Everton is a “good place” for Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but thinks he should stay at Arsenal.

In one of the more intriguing transfer stories on deadline day, Maitland-Niles is desperate to leave Arsenal and join a side where he gets game time.

That is, according to his Instagram post. The player made it clear that he is crying out for a move to a club where he is allowed to play regularly.

Maitland-Niles to Everton: Bent gives verdict on potential move

reported that Everton have made a loan-to-buy offer to sign the England international. It remains to be seen if a deal will happen.

Maitland-Niles wants to play in midfield, rather than right-back or left-back. But many believe he is better on either side of the defence.

Indeed, he got into the England side as a left-back. That is the opinion of Bent. He says Everton is a good move, but would rather he stays at Arsenal.

“It is a good place to go but he might be in the same position. I know he doesn’t want to play right-back – but he is better than Cedric and Bellerin.

“He went to West Brom last season and it didn’t go great in midfield. But he got himself into the England side as a left-back,” Bent said.

Maitland-Niles – Arsenal, Everton or elsewhere on deadline day?

Maitland-Niles is a great player. But the midfielder’s best asset is his versatility. So, if he wants to play, he needs to play in defence, too.

He seems unwilling to do this. But Maitland-Niles, unfortunately for the player himself perhaps, is better at full-back than he is in midfield.

He needs to knuckle down, admit defeat in his stance and either stay at Arsenal or join Everton and play as a full-back in the coming weeks.
