Danny Rose exit comments are bad news for Leeds United’s hopes of cash windfall
Danny Rose has made it clear to Tottenham Hotspur that he has no intention of leaving the club in January and will instead wait for his current contract to expire.
Over the summer, the England international was heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham and was even left off the foreign leg of their pre-season preparations to find a new club.
the Spurs star has made it clear he will wait until his contract expires in 2021 and leave Tottenham on a free. This statement is undoubtedly bad news for Leeds United.
“In January, you are probably going to hear something [about my future]. I’m telling you right now that I’m not going anywhere until my contract is finished.
“My contract is up in 18 months’ time and I’ll leave the football club then. People can save their time – trying to get stuff ready for January about me being sold. Because I can tell you now: it ain’t happening.”
Why?
When there was talk of Rose leaving Tottenham for £50 million, as reported by The Mirror, in 2017, Leeds were probably getting very excited about a potential cash windfall.
Doncaster-born Rose came through the ranks at Leeds but never made a first-team appearance for the club before heading to Tottenham in 2007. It was a disappointment for Leeds, but finances dictated they had to sell at the time.

However, a sell-on clause was inserted into the deal. will receive 10 percent of any profit made on Rose’s transfer fee – so subtracting the £1 million fee they picked up from the Yorkshire side could have cashed in a cool £4.9 million off such a deal.
Now Rose was never going to command a £50 million fee anymore. He is older, his form has dipped and his contract is running down. But even a £15 million move would have seen Leeds at least make some money off their former youngster.
Instead, it appears Leeds will never receive anything in terms of the sell-on clause which once looked set to make them a near £5 million.
The only way Leeds can maybe still take advantage of this situation is if they themselves bring Rose back to Elland Road in 2021. But that’s another story entirely.
