Danny Murphy suggests what 23-year-old Manchester United star can’t be working on in training

Danny Murphy has shared what surprises him about Antony after the Manchester United winger had an effort on goal deflected behind for a corner in their FA Cup tie with Newport County.

Antony returned to the starting lineup as Erik ten Hag’s side looked to avoid an upset at Rodney Parade.

It appeared that it was going to be a routine win, with Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo putting the visitors 2-0 up during the first-half against the League Two side.

Danny Murphy baffled by Antony during Manchester United tie

Antony missed a couple of chances before the break. The Brazilian was leaning back and sent one effort over the crossbar. Meanwhile, another strike was blocked and led to the visitors getting a corner.

Antony had cut inside onto his left foot from the right-hand side to create the shooting opportunity. And speaking on (broadcast on 28/1; 17:02), Danny Murphy suggested that he is baffled as to how the 23-year-old has not improved on his weaker foot.

“What I’m surprised at is that they don’t do more work in training, because sometimes going on the right, and just doing some right foot crosses, do some work on his right foot so he can go down the right and get some crosses in. You don’t have to whip them in, you can stand them up,” he said.

“Damien Duff was brilliant at it. I spent a year with Damien Duff for Fulham where he played on the right and he kept going on his right foot and just popping it up to the back post. And then if they over-cover, he’d go in on his left foot. It was stuff he worked on every day.

“It’s really not that difficult for him to practice it and do it more often.”

Winger is just too predictable given his talent

There is absolutely no question that Antony has been a disappointing signing for Manchester United. He has not got close to living up to expectations.

The former Ajax star did provide the assist for Bruno Fernandes’ goal. But that is only his fourth assist for the club in 67 games. Meanwhile, he did manage to score his ninth goal for the club in the second-half – and it came with his right foot.

It does feel that he is just too predictable. Full-backs know that Antony is going to want to come inside if he is playing on the right flank.

There is still time for Antony to turn his Old Trafford career around, and he has shown glimpses. But clearly, he needs to improve drastically if he is going to prove his doubters wrong.
