Danny Murphy suggests Michael Edwards targets ‘genius’ Premier League who’s a Liverpool fan

The search for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement remains ongoing, with a decision far from being made at Liverpool after the news that Xabi Alonso is staying at German side Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Alonso has chosen to stay put in Germany as he closes in on the Bundesliga title, and take his current side into the Champions League next season. Bayern, Liverpool and Real Madrid were linked with a move.

That leaves Liverpool back to square one. Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Germany gaffer Julian Nagelsmann have also been touted as possible targets for the role.

Michael Edwards has returned to Liverpool as the club’s CEO, and has drafted in Richard Hughes as sporting director. It is up to them who they bring to the club in the coming months, to replace Klopp.

Danny Murphy picks his ideal candidate for Liverpool job

Well, Danny Murphy has made a suggestion – albeit an ambitious, and an unlikely one. He thinks The Reds should go after Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, one of his former clubs raiding another.

Speaking to on Tuesday, the former Liverpool midfielder even said that Postecoglou is a Liverpool fans and that he might be tempted with a move – should those at Anfield make a move.

“Tottenham fans wouldn’t like it, but the way Ange plays, fans would like to see Liverpool continue that high-energy, front-foot way. I know he’s a Liverpool fan, throwing it out there. I’d like to see Ange.”

Why Liverpool will find it difficult to land Postecoglou

Described as by former Celtic man Moritz Jenz, Postecoglou has made a wonderful start to life in the Premier League at Tottenham – as his side battle with Aston Villa for fourth, after losing Harry Kane.

But Postecoglou and Tottenham has the feel of a bit of a project right now. He seems as though he is in it for the long haul and while a move to Anfield may tempt him – he knows it will be a very tough job.

Following in the footsteps of Klopp is a near-impossible task. But Postecoglou – who has impressed Glenn Hoddle, too – might have the best chance of doing so. Shaka Hislop also touted him for Liverpool.
