Danny Murphy suggests 21-year-old Tottenham midfielder could play at centre-back after Micky van de Ven injury

Tottenham have a centre-back crisis on their hands.

Cristian Romero is suspended, Micky Van de Ven is injured, and beyond that, they don’t have a lot of depth.

Eric Dier is, as ever, one player they could call upon to fill in one of the gaps, but that still leaves another glaring hole in the squad.

Speaking on , Danny Murphy has offered one alternative solution.

The pundit says that if he were Ange Postecoglou, he’d be tempted to use Pape Sarr at centre-half, claiming that he 21-year-old midfielder has the pace to play in Postecoglou’s high line.

Use Sarr at centre-half

Murphy suggested using the young midfielder in the defence when speaking to Anto Ferdinand.

“It might be a younger player that might play with Eric Dier,” Ferdinand said.

“I’d be tempted to put Sarr back there, pace,” Murphy said.

“It will be an interesting time now for Tottenham, they’ll either consolidate until players are back or they’ll crumble,” Ferdinand concluded.

Desperation

Things would have to be pretty desperate at Tottenham if they were to start using Sarr at centre-back.

The midfielder has never played in the defence in his life, and while he’s no stranger to a tackle, playing a centre-back is a completely different role to anything he’s used to.

Yes, he does have the pace to make up for the absence of Micky Van de Ven, but, in our view, Spurs’ best bet to deal with these absences is to use either Ashley Phillips or Alfie Dorrington and test out some of their youth players in a first-team capacity.

What Tottenham do over the next few weeks remains to be seen, but, in all honesty, we’d be very shocked if Sarr was the player they turned towards to solve their defensive issues.
