Danny Murphy strongly disagrees with the claim Ange Postecoglou made after Tottenham’s defeat to Wolves, ‘that’s not good play’

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has strongly disagreed with a claim Ange Postecoglou made after losing to Wolves.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 17th Premier League defeat of the season as they were beaten 4-2 by Wolverhampton Wanderers who moved to within just two points of them.

Serious doubts are now looming over Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham, with Thursday’s Europa League tie against Eintracht Frankfurt set to be decisive.

Speaking after their loss at Mollineux, Postecoglou made a strange claim about Spurs’ performance which Murphy was quick to rubbish.

Danny Murphy slams Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham claim after Wolves defeat

Danny Murphy has slammed Ange Postecoglou’s claim that Tottenham played well against Wolves, firmly insisting that the Australian’s team played like ‘schoolboys’ at times.

During his press conference, Postecoglou insisted: “Funny game because for the most part I thought our football was decent considering all the changes we’ve made.”

However, the BBC Sport pundit responded to Postecoglou’s statement, strongly disagreeing that Spurs played ‘decent’.

When asked whether he agreed with Postecoglou that Tottenham played well against Wolves, Murphy told BBC MOTD: “I don’t agree, interpretation of playing well for me is when a team attacks with some good rhythm, defends well as a team, fights together, does normal things, a collective football IQ.

“Some of their defending was schoolboyish, basic stuff! Yes, they played some nice patterns and they made some nice chances, they’ve got some good players, so of course they’re going to do that.

“But sorry, Ange, that’s not good play. It’s good forward play, but good play is being competitive in a game by being organised, defensive at times, being good going forward, recovery runs, winning second balls.”

How Ange Postecoglou ‘completely missed the target’ in this press conference

Totteham journalist Alasadir Gold who was in attendance for Postecoglou’s press conference believes that the Spurs boss ‘completely missed the target’ with what he said.

Gold revealed how the 59-year-old went into the press conference with the idea that he was going to put his team’s mistakes down as ‘unusal’ moments which happened in that match. But unfortunately, these mistakes aren’t ‘unusual, they’ve happened far too often at Tottenham this season.

Gold said on his YouTube “As you can tell, this was not a good press conference for me from Postecoglou. I felt he decided he was just going to use the word ‘unusual’. He used it four times to describe things that happened in the match. But it wasn’t an unusual game.

“It’s a shame because one of his biggest gifts Postecoglou is to communicate whether it be to players or the public/media – but he completely missed the target in this press conference.”
