Danny Murphy says Manchester United should have signed 27-year-old rapid forward
Danny Murphy has said that Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United should have signed Timo Werner before he joined Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.
The former Liverpool midfielder has outlined the attributes of Werner that would have made the ex-Chelsea player a useful addition to the United squad.
So, what has Danny Murphy said about Timo Werner and Manchester United? Let’s take a look.
Manchester United told about Timo Werner transfer mistake
Well, Danny Murphy has been giving his take on Tottenham Hotspur signing Timo Werner in the January transfer window.
Spurs have secured the services of the former Chelsea forward on a loan deal until the end of the season. The North London club have the option to make it permanent in the summer of 2024.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that United should have signed the 27-year-old before he joined Tottenham.
Earlier this month, credited United with interest in Werner. and West Ham United were also linked with the £164,000-a-week () striker.

Murphy wrote in : “Signing Werner on loan with a £15million option to buy looks sensible business for Tottenham.
“Clubs at the top level need five forwards with different attributes competing for three places. It allows managers to make changes during matches as well as between them.
“Manchester United were linked with Werner and he’d have been useful for them, although the less than harmonious atmosphere at Old Trafford might have made it harder for him.
“Every move Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou makes at the moment is welcomed by his fans, whereas United’s are so frustrated by Erik ten Hag’s signings, they’re quick to criticise any incomings short of Kylian Mbappe.
“Spurs already had wide options but the way ‘Angeball’ works, Werner is a good profile with his pace, energy, work ethic and versatility.”
My View: Manchester United right not to sign Timo Werner
In my opinion, Manchester United were right not to sign former Chelsea forward Timo Werner even on a loan deal.
I do not think that the 27-year-old Germany international forward would have been a particularly great signing for the Red Devils.
From his time at Chelsea, we know that Werner is not a prolific goalscorer. He scored just 10 goals in 56 Premier League matches for the Blues.
Even when back at RB Leipzig, Werner did not have the best of times in front of goal.
The Germany international scored just two goals in the Bundesliga this season and found the back of the net nine times in 23 league starts in the last campaign.
Werner is better off being deployed out wide and not as the main centre-forward.
United do not need a wide man with urgency. What they need is a top-class striker who can bang in the goals for fun, unlike Rasmus Hojlund.
